Synopsis

As the Ranas – a happily patriarchal joint family – yearn for the birth of a baby boy to continue the family line, their
youngest son secretly joins an erotic dance theatre and falls for an ambitious trans starlet. Their impossible love story
slowly illuminates the entire Rana family’s desire for a sexual rebellion. The film addresses a serious issue by evoking
the crisis of a traditional family model imprisoning individuals and rejecting desire as individual freedom. The staging
film the taboos, the forbidden, and from this point of view, is remarkable on the cinematic plane. Joyland, which comes
to us from a rare cinematography, received the jury award Un certain regard this year in Cannes.
